Korinne Sugasawara, AFC®
Founder of Kite and Compass Financial
Korinne helps people align their money with their ideal life. She specializes in serving California public sector employees and folks from queer, polyamorous, and neurodivergent communities, offering financial clarity with warmth and zero judgment.
With over a decade of experience as a CalPERS member and public employee, plus a background in drafting pension legislation for the California State Senate, Korinne brings deep, real-world knowledge to her work.
Her path into financial planning started after being turned away by an advisor for not having “enough” money. She took matters into her own hands, diving into personal finance books, discovering the FIRE movement, and learning how to navigate her finances independently—until a bike accident reminded her that life isn’t lived in spreadsheets.
Korinne is an Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) and a candidate for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification, expected in mid-2025. She also volunteers with Women’s Money Matters and Savvy Ladies, supporting women with limited access to financial guidance.
When she’s not talking about pensions or how to have a money date, you’ll find Korinne trying out new recipes, biking around San Jose, catching up with friends at a low-key park hang, or relaxing with a good sci-fi or fantasy novel. She’ll always stop to say hi to a good dog.
