John Smutniak

John’s firm, AnchorLine Financial LLC, is focused on serving two main types of households and families:

Gen Xers approaching retirement
This group includes both private sector and federal government employees. AnchorLine helps them prepare for early retirement, pay for college, and navigate Social Security. Drawing on his own experience as an entrepreneur, John also works with business owners in this stage of life who want to optimize their finances and build a more secure, fulfilling future for themselves and their employees.

“Footloose Americans” with an international outlook
Perhaps you’re planning to retire outside the United States.
Or you’re living the expat life while working abroad.
Or maybe you’re exploring life as a digital nomad running your own business.
As a dual U.S.–EU citizen with decades of international experience, John understands from personal experience the challenges and opportunities of life abroad — and the unique financial planning needs that come with it.

Across both groups, John’s goal is the same: to provide the high level of service he once delivered to multi-billion-dollar pension funds earlier in his career.

AnchorLine’s planning is 100% fiduciary and fee-only — a refreshing change for clients used to legacy, traditional brokerage firm models.

AnchorLine serves clients looking for a more customized, personal and authentic approach – without any sales quotas, products or pressure of any kind. Just clear, honest advice.

John graduated from MIT with a degree in Economics and spent his early career as an economics journalist in London. He now lives in the Houston area with his family, where they enjoy long bike rides and hikes (when it’s not too hot!) and supporting activities at their local school.
